A Computer Game With an Etymology That Could Have Soundtracked The Idea of the Gambler

A sport is something which people regularly do just for fun. So if you play a sport, then you probably enjoy it just as much as the people who follow it. If so, then it’s different from job hunting. Many sports are spectator sports, and therefore there are plenty of opportunities to make money through them. In these instances, there’s usually money to be made as it’s also a sort of entertainment.

Computer games are often very similar to sport. For example, people play computer games such as solitaire every night, or perhaps every day. The only difference between playing the game and watching somebody else play is the fact that you can’t see the person behind the game. You can’t hear them talking to each other through their headsets, or read their facial expressions. But in terms of entertainment value, they’re pretty much the same thing.

But computer games can be entertaining for two types of people. First of all, they can be entertaining for people who are extremely familiar with the particular board game, or video game in question. The more you know about the game, the more likely it will be that you’ll enjoy it. And secondly, they can be entertaining for people who are completely new to them. The reason for this is that a computer game can be programmed very precisely, so that the game feels as though it’s for real.

So just how old is the computer game we’re talking about here? Well, depending on who you ask, the computer game could be hundreds of years old. However, if you ask someone who’s seriously into playing games like chess or strategy games, the answer would most likely be closer to twenty-five hundred years old. How did these games become so popular, then? It’s fairly simple to answer, actually.

Well, let’s go back to the etymology question. Computer games were originally created by someone who understood the basics of the game they were emulating. So, instead of playing the traditional word game, they played something much more abstract, at least at the time. Now, obviously, word games and board games have evolved greatly since then. However, the basic game has stayed pretty much the same, at least up until now.

So what about the origin of the word “gambler” itself? Back in the day, it came from the combination of two words: gambler and libra. That’s right, the game was originally named after the famous Roman God of wine and revelry, Bacchus. However, due to corruption (or just bad luck), he was changed into a goat! So, when the game was corrupted somehow, the name was changed to “to gamble” – or rather, to mean “to play with cards.”
