Games cheats have long been an integral part of the gaming experience, from simple shortcuts to elaborate alterations that alter or augment gameplay mechanics. Some game cheats are purposefully included in a title by its developers, while others are inserted through third-party software or found unintentionally by gamers as a result of bugs or glitches in a game’s software. Regardless of their origin, many players are still willing to engage in such activities – whether for the thrill of taking a shortcut or simply because they don’t have the time or inclination to master a game mechanically.

Cheating in video games can help gamers hone their programming skills as they learn to manipulate code and understand how the engine that powers the game works. It can also provide an avenue for players to explore a game in a way that might not be possible without such an aid. However, some gamers feel that cheating is unethical and dishonest, especially when it comes to online multiplayer. According to a recent study by Irdeto, 59% of respondents say that other gamers’ cheating negatively impacts their multiplayer gaming experience.

In the past, a player could often find cheats through add-on hardware or programs that would modify a game cartridge or disc to allow for the entry of a cheat code. This was known as “hacking”. With the emergence of online gaming and professional gaming tournaments, often with large prize money, hackers developed ways to bypass detection systems and create their own cheat codes or hacks that give them an unfair advantage over other players. This became known as “cheating” and is viewed as unethical by most gamers.

Internal game cheats are more difficult to program as the hacker or developer must go through a whole step of development that includes creating hooks, looking over what can be hundreds of leaked source code files and understanding how certain aspects of a game’s graphical interfaces work and even 3D rendering engines. Once a hacker has created the required cheat they must then inject it into the vulnerable file of the game and test out various functions to ensure that they have rewired the core code of the game to execute the desired function such as ESP, Aimbot, X-Ray or ACB (Anti Cheat Bypass).

The most popular and well-known types of video game cheats are usually called “cheat codes” or just “cheats”. These are accessed by entering a special string of characters into the console of the system on which the game is being played. These cheats range from granting in-game currency to allowing for the removal of character limitations and can be used to make the game more challenging or fun.

The most controversial type of video game cheat is an aimbot, a piece of software that can be installed in a game to automatically target and shoot opponents when they appear within the field-of-view or aiming reticule of a player’s character. Aimbots have become particularly popular in first-person shooter games, where they can be combined with a triggerbot that automates the firing of weapons when an opponent is detected.
