What is a Gamer?
A gamer is someone who plays games on a regular basis. This can be video games, board games or even role-playing games. There is a wide range of different games available and the gaming industry is a multi-billion dollar business. Whether it is for entertainment, socializing or competing, there are many reasons why people enjoy playing games. The popularity of video games has led to the development of many different types of hardware and platforms for gaming. There are now games that can be played on the PC, consoles or mobile devices. There are also massively multiplayer online (MMO) games that allow thousands of players to inhabit the same virtual world at the same time.
While most people think that playing video games is a waste of time, there are a number of reasons why this is not the case. One reason is that playing video games helps exercise the brain, which can improve cognition and increase problem-solving skills. In addition, games can be very entertaining and can help relieve stress. In addition, there is evidence that gamers are more creative and have a higher IQ than non-gamers.
In the past, the term “gamer” was used to describe a group of people that were considered to be social outcasts because they spent so much time in front of a screen. However, in the past decade, games have become more mainstream and there is now a large population of casual gamers who enjoy gaming for fun. While these gamers do not enjoy the same level of detail or complexity as avid gamers, they are still a part of the gaming community.
There are a number of ways to categorize gamers and one of the most common is the Bartle Player Type Taxonomy. This system divides gamers into four categories: Achievers, Explorers, Socializers and Killers. Achievers are interested in achieving goals, winning rewards and increasing their in-game score. Explorers like to explore all aspects of the game and discover all hidden areas. Socializers like to socialize with other players online and in-game. Killers are competitive and enjoy beating other gamers in the game.
Bartle’s player typologies are widely used in the gaming industry as a way to understand why gamers play and to develop games that appeal to these profiles. However, few studies have compared the results of these player profile tests to actual gaming behavior or sociodemographic characteristics.
This study aims to do just that. It will examine the relationship between the different player profile types and gaming behavior as well as personality traits. In addition, it will compare these results with sociodemographic data to determine if there is any correlation between the types of gamers and their demographic characteristics. In order to do this, a 21 item gamer profile questionnaire will be administered and participants’ responses will be analyzed using multivariate analysis. This will identify the five most prevalent gamer profiles and their relationship with the participants’ personality traits, gaming behavior and sociodemographic data.
