Types of Gamers
Video games are interactive, often multi-player experiences that engage players in a virtual world with different characters and settings. They can take you to far away places, immerse you in the past or into the future and challenge you with exciting puzzles. Gamers can be men or women, young or old, and they can come from all walks of life. They can also be people who play a few hours of games on a weekly basis to people who spend many hours every day playing. It is common for gaming media and industry analysts to divide gamers into several broad behavioral categories based on the type of gamer they are, level of dedication to gaming and primary type of games played.
Whether they play them on a PC, console, or mobile device, video games stimulate the brain and can have positive effects on health and wellness. They can increase the brain’s grey matter, help improve short-term memory, and promote healthy sleep habits. They can also provide an opportunity for socialization and a way to relieve stress. While there are many benefits to gaming, excessive gaming can have negative consequences. It is easy to lose track of time spent gaming and can negatively impact a person’s performance at work or school. Some people become addicted to video games and may experience withdrawal symptoms when they do not have access to their gaming devices. It is also a known fact that prolonged periods of sitting at a computer can cause poor posture, which could lead to back and neck problems later in life.
The gaming culture is large and complicated with each game spawning its own merch, inside jokes, language, dances, internet communities, cosplay events, and so on. It is a huge industry that has grown to include professional e-sports teams. It is a culture that many people enjoy, and it can bring a lot of joy to their lives.
One of the most important aspects of gaming is the sense of achievement that it provides to gamers. When a player meets a challenging goal in a game, completes an event, gets a new item or status, moves up to a higher level or gains money or rewards in-game, it triggers the brain’s dopamine centers. This feeling of accomplishment and reward is addictive and can lead to an unhealthy addiction to gaming.
The Escaper persona, making up about 25% of the gaming population, is characterized by their use of immersive gameplay as a coping strategy to deal with negative moods or to escape from real-life struggles. They are driven by a desire to achieve, but they have low self-esteem and high impulsivity which affect their decision making. The Heavy Gamer persona, which makes up 5% of the gaming population, is a combination of the Escaper and the Achiever, and is motivated by escapism and role-playing. They are competitive and often compete on public servers with other clans. This group is the heaviest spenders on hardware, streaming content and information about gaming.
