The History of Games Cheats
A games cheat is any method a video game player uses to create an advantage beyond normal gameplay, typically for unfair gain. This advantage may be obtained through the use of external software or hardware (a third-party cheat device, a cheat code or hack, or an exploit), or through the manipulation of in-game mechanics. The use of cheats can lead to a variety of issues, ranging from the inadvertent to the deliberate corruption of game balance and integrity.
Cheating can be a serious problem for both the gaming industry and gamers themselves. In esports, where huge amounts of prize money are on the line, cheats can be the difference between victory and defeat. This can make some players reluctant to compete in tournaments at all, and can negatively impact the experience for honest gamers who choose to participate in esports.
In addition, cheating can have a significant effect on the enjoyment of gamers, even those who do not participate in esports. A recent study by Irdeto found that 59% of gamers report that other players’ cheating negatively impacted their online multiplayer gaming experience. This can be especially damaging to games with competitive elements, or those that feature leagues and ranked play.
The first games cheats were implemented by developers as a way to ease the development process of new titles. They would give themselves special abilities like invulnerability, infinite ammo or level select so they could test the gameplay of a new title without having to go back to the title screen and start again. These codes were built into the games for testing purposes only and never intended to be used by gamers.
During the 1980s, players began to create their own self-made cheats. With a little computer knowledge, they were able to use 8-bit computing systems to manipulate the memory values of in-game statistics like health and ammo. This was known as POKEing. These players then shared their third-party cheats with other gamers via word of mouth. This was the beginning of the gaming guide craze that dominated the decade.
Modern games have sophisticated anti-cheat systems that are constantly evolving to adapt to new techniques and patterns. This makes it difficult for cheaters to remain undetected, and can even render a game unplayable. However, some cheaters are able to circumvent these systems with the use of “hooks,” which are methods that allow them to modify internal game functions.
This may involve modifying the game’s source code, looking at decompiled game data or intercepting game functions. These are usually more risky methods of cheating as they require advanced programming skills, but can provide a powerful advantage. Other cheats are more in-game, such as aimbots that can automatically lock onto opponents for perfect accuracy or game hacks that boost characters’ stats to the max. These types of cheats are much more popular, and often generate a lot of controversy due to their potential to corrupt the game’s fairness. As such, these cheats are more likely to be detected by anti-cheat systems.
