A recent report by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) found that most gamers play for fun, to pass time, and to relieve stress. But it’s not all fun and games, as a lot of gamers can be quite serious about their hobby. These players often engage in a deep and thoughtful process called learning through practice. Learning through practice is a natural human process that happens when we take action and get feedback. Then we course correct and try again. This process is what allows us to master new skills and overcome obstacles. This same process is what gamers use when they play games, and it’s an integral part of why gaming can be so effective at relieving stress.
ESA’s report also reveals that gamers aren’t primarily interested in the graphics, storyline or level of difficulty of their favorite titles. Instead, the top reasons they play are: overcoming challenges in the game with tactics and strategy, experiencing immersive virtual worlds, and enjoying detailed graphics. These are all key factors that help gamers achieve a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when they complete a game.
The other top reasons for gaming that ESA reports are competing in esports, socializing with friends, and relaxing. This is in line with other research that has shown that gaming can be a form of therapy for some. There are even a number of games that have been developed to serve this purpose, such as the stress-relieving “Flower” series of puzzle games.
It’s important to note that the average age of gamers is increasing, with the youngest gamers being just 2 years old. And while the majority of gamers are male, female gamers make up about 24% of all gamers.
Some researchers have used gamer characteristics to categorize people who play games into a taxonomy, such as the one proposed by Bartle. This type of taxonomy can be helpful for marketers trying to target specific sub-demographics within the gaming community.
For example, Esports gamers are a highly targeted audience, as they’re the apex gamers who spend a lot of time in public multiplayer matches and compete in tournaments. These gamers are usually young, male, and invest heavily in their gaming technology and equipment. They also have the disposable income to devote significant amounts of time to their gaming passion, which can sometimes lead to them being accepted into a professional esports team.
