A Beginner’s Guide to Minecraft
For over 15 years millions of players have immersed themselves in minecraft, a video game where you can create anything you want in a world made from blocks. This open-ended “sandbox” game allows players to explore and build, either alone or with other players in multiplayer mode. With a huge array of tools and materials available, the limits of what can be created in this fantasy-world are limitless. The popularity of minecraft has spawned many spinoffs, including Minecraft: Story Mode and Minecraft Dungeons (both developed by Mojang).
The controls in minecraft are simple. The mouse or trackball moves the character, and the left button hits whatever the player is pointing at. This can be blocks, animals, enemies or any other object in the game’s world. The right button opens a GUI to interact with the object that is currently held, or it can be used to place the item in the world. The right button can also be used to pick up an item from the ground, or to open a door.
When the player first starts in minecraft, the world is randomly generated and has no trees or other natural resources. If the player wants to survive, he must gather food, build a shelter and fight hostile creatures that spawn at night. These are called monsters and include zombies, skeletons and spiders. The primary way to attack is with a sword, although a shovel or bare fist can be used as well. The monsters drop food when killed, which can be cooked in a furnace (8 cobblestone blocks with an empty middle slot) to give the player more energy.
If the player is not careful to collect enough food, he will die from hunger. If he is not wearing armor, he will take damage from enemy attacks as well. To prevent this, the player must gather a variety of materials and craft armor, such as a sword, axe or helmet. The best armor is made from leather, which provides the most protection.
In addition to weapons and armor, the player can make other items to help him in his quest to build everything he wants in the world of minecraft. To do so, the player must learn to read and understand a variety of crafting recipes, which are located in the game’s crafting table GUI. These recipes are also available on the official minecraft wiki, which contains information about every block in the game and how to use them.
In the beginning of a new minecraft world, it is recommended that the player make a wooden 2×2 block and place it in the crafting table to receive wood planks. These can then be crafted into wood tools, which are placed in the inventory and used to dig blocks at a faster rate than unarmed. However, using a tool for any purpose other than digging will cause it to degrade in durability. Eventually, the tool will break and must be repaired or replaced.
